DESCRIPTION OF EACH  “PLAY AND LEARN GROUP”

I.YANKEE DOODLE DANDEE- about a 45 minute duration with 15 minute play time
This beloved American tune had some dubious roots. Parents and children will discuss a “pun” and investigate the true meaning behind Yankee Doodle Dandee. A discussion of colonial life in America follows, with photographs and manipulatives (toys etc.) of the time to depict American life in the late 1700’s. The children will also sing Yankee Doodle Dandee and partcipate in a parade wherein they will use "fifes" and "drums". CRAFT: Tricorn hats, bonnets and vests.

II.PAUL REVERE’S RIDE -about a 45 minute duration with 15 minute play time
A discussion of the famous event during the American Revolution will uncover American attitudes of the time. A reading of Henry Longfellow’s poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” will be accompanied by a reenactment of the famous ride. Parents and children will ride through Boston and to the North Church to hang their lanterns. CRAFT: Lanterns, ponies and macaroni wig.

III. THE COLONIAL MENU- about a 45 minute duration with 15 minute play time
Parents and children will discuss the American diet during the 1700s. A focus on food in New Englandand traditional dishes. The connection to roots in farming and agriculture will be investigated. Parents and children will explore the influence of the English in early American history as well as Native American contributions. CRAFT: Butter and cornbread and ball in a cup.
